THE TRUTH ABOUT STARTING SOLO

Working from home? Is it the golden egg it’s made out to be? Can you really make money, progress professionally and find that elusive balance between juggling work and home?

Well, the answer is yes…and no. Starting an online or home based business is great and the truth is, it does give you greater flexibility but not in the areas you might think.

If you were thinking about staying in bed till mid morning and opening up your laptop over a lazy cup of coffee at midday, where have you been? While a late start would be amazing, it’s not what your competitors are doing. Office hours are office hours and you generally have to work within this tight remit. This isn’t true of course for some businesses but the truth is that when starting out, the hours are going to be long and hard.

The Boss Of Everything

When you’re the boss, you’re the boss of everything, by which we mean you’re your own accountant, administrator, worker and HR officer. If you’re starting out on your own, there’s so much to take on besides the actual work. Sometimes it’s good to hand over some of your services to the professionals, such as agencies like Figment, who can take some of the strain for you.

Otherwise, yes it’s just you getting to know the ins and outs of business life.

You Might Get It Wrong

In fact, chances are you probably will but that’s ok, really. If you can shoulder the disappointment and get back up again then you will succeed, eventually. Grit and determination are key to making your business thrive, even when all you want to do is throw in the towel and go back to your monthly pay cheque.

Similarly, you’ll probably get stressed. This sounds counterintuitive doesn’t it? Didn’t you leave the 9 – 5 to get away from all that? The stress though is different. It comes from your own personal desire to make your dream work, not fulfil the workload given to you from other people. It’s different and it drives you toward achieving your goals.

Take stress seriously though. Schedule breaks for yourself and make sure, if it all feels ready to overwhelm you, that you take time out to deal with it properly.

Success Is Terrifying

Well, just initially. It’s what you’ve wanted all along but the day you see your business actually growing and thriving and turning over a profit may actually make you catch your breath. That’s the time to spur yourself forward and invest in some ideas that will take your business to the next level.

Starting out on your own can be daunting and make you second guess your decision at so many points along the way but when you’re making your own rules, creating your own company culture and making a living from doing something you love you’ll never regret it.

Putting in those hard hours now is going to pay dividends, forming the foundations to your business that are going to pay off for years to come.
