6 PRACTICAL WAYS TO TEACH YOUR KIDS ABOUT MONEY

An important part of financial success of any individual or family is to be able to establish a budget and then learn to live within that budget.   However, it is not that straightforward and when it comes to children it can become difficult if they have never been taught about money nor the fundamental concept in budgeting and economics which is our needs and our wants.

Needs are something you must have for survival.  For example, food and water.  Without food, you would not be able to live.  Wants are something that you would like to have, but it is not necessary, and you could do without it.

Sometimes needs and wants overlap.  For example, cake is a food, but it is not a need, but a want.  In general, you need a basic diet to survive, but that diet does not need to include cake.

Teaching your children these valuable lessons is a skill that will be extremely valuable in later life.

Below are some fun ideas to teach your kids about money.

  1. Pay for some items in cash

This may seem a little strange but as most transactions are completed online and a lot of purchases are made using debit or credit cards some children have never seen cash!  So, let them see money so they get a sense of income and expenditure.  Also, explain to them how debit cards and credit cards work.

  1. Give them a budget

Setting a budge together for your child will help them overall.  Give them pocket money and work together writing down the amount and what they spend it on.  This simple tracking money will be so valuable as they grow older and earn their own salary.

  1. Teach them how to earn money

Ask your children to do tasks around the house and let them ‘earn’ their own money.  Also, teach them about selling unwanted toys or books on EBay or at a car boot sale.

  1. Making saving money fun

Buy your child a piggy bank and encourage them to save their pennies – let them see how quickly putting money away can add up.  Why not make up a savings chart so they can see the amount of savings grow!

  1. Talk about money

It is very important to talk to your children about money, discuss needs and wants as well as the basics of how people earn money and what types of things you pay for in terms of your monthly bills.

  1. It’s not all about money

If you are anything like me, you love spending time with your family and sometimes that means going for a walk on the beach or taking photos together or watching a favourite TV programme.  Teach your children that it is not all about money – that doing things together as a family is priceless!

Happy teaching!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY WITH MEAL PLANNING

Years ago, meal planning was something that I never considered but now it is a necessity as far as I am concerned.

Meal planning can help in so many ways, including saving you money and time overall.  It also helps you cut down on waste and can turn what becomes a boring dinner into a lovely feast!

People often say to me that they just don’t have the time to plan, well I’m here to tell you it doesn’t take that long and it will save you time – really!  Below I have listed the reasons why I meal plan so hopefully it will give you an idea of what the benefits are.

Weekly meal planning saves you time

Going grocery shopping without a list means wandering up and down the aisles trying to come up with recipes on the spot.  Or you think you have all the ingredients to make that meal at home, only to find when you get there you’re missing an essential ingredient.

Well with meal planning you prepare your list in advance so you don’t have to wander aimlessly up and down those aisles being tempted by offers you don’t’ really need.

Weekly meal planning helps you eat a more balanced diet

When you sit down to plan your weekly meals, it gives you time to consider adding in vegetables and thinking about the healthier options.  For us, we like to ensure we use the vegetables at the start of the meal plan so you get them when they are at their best and the freshest.  It also means you refrain from buying unhealthy snacks because you have your list in front of you!

Weekly meal planning stops you getting stuck in a rut

There are times when I can’t for the life of me figure out any more inventive ways to include vegetables in our diet so taking time to plan and look at recipes is great.

Indeed, as I will talk about below, signing up to Hello Fresh is a great way of keeping your meals interesting.

Steps to creating a weekly meal plan

Step 1:  Do a little recipe research or sign up to Hello Fresh.

Step 2:  Create a week-long meal plan – I’m offering you a free meal planner diary which you can download below.

Step 3: Make a shopping list from the meal plan AFTER looking in your fridge, freezer, and store cupboard.

Step 4:  Go shopping and stick to your list

After all this you will find that it will have taken you less time than if you’d been wandering around those grocery aisles, plus you will have planned your meals for the week, saved yourself money and set yourself a healthy eating plan.

I’m offering you a free meal and recipe planner to help you along your journey to meal plan.  To download just sign up below.

A PENNY SAVED IS A PENNY EARNED – SO DON’T WASTE UP TO 9.9% OF IT!

Guest Post by George Retired Broker.

Apart from being a seminal album by Dire Straits, Alchemy is the very ancient art of turning worthless metals into gold. Probably the single most notable feature of this noble practice is that it, unsurprisingly, doesn’t work. Imagine my joy then when I stumbled across, in Tesco of all places, a modern equivalent whereby I was promised that I could instantly turn cash into er.. cash.

It gets better, but I’ll get to that in a minute. Let’s backtrack a bit and I will tell you how I came by this amazing discovery.

As I am no longer shackled by time constraints, I tend to do my supermarket shopping either very early in the day, or very late. No crowds. No hassle and bustle. Lovely. Sometimes though it means no checkout operators either and I am marshalled toward the self service checkouts. The ones that are programmed not to like me. The ones that talk to me and I can’t answer back. “Unexpected and perplexed retired broker in bagging area” is a common one sided conversation I have with said checkout. However, the discovery of a Coinstar machine in the entrance of my local Tesco may have altered my relationship with the self service checkouts forever.

For anybody that isn’t familiar with a Coinstar machine, I will explain. About the size of a photo booth they stand in the entrance to most supermarkets and are emblazoned with wording such as “How much is in your jar?” and “Coins in – spending money out.” The idea is very simple; many people throw their small change into a pot or jar and every now and again get it changed. I do it myself, which is why I took a closer look at one of these machines. Simple to use, you just tip your pot of pennies and 5p’s into the machine, it takes a few moments to mechanically sort and count, then it gives you notes and higher denomination coins – less a 9.9% fee!

Yes, I have found a way of saving that will guarantee to lose you 9.9% instantly.

Now, as anyone who reads my blog knows, I tend not to care too much about an actual financial product, but more about people having the right information about it so that they can make choices that are good for them. In this instance, after conducting a not that scientific straw poll of people (six in total) I am leaning toward the fact that this fee isn’t as prominently shown as it could be. In fact all six people I asked didn’t know about it at all. There is no suggestion that the fee is not mentioned, I am just suggesting that it is mentioned in a more restrained way than the “What is in your jar” headline. It is also mentioned on the website. Just click on the link marked support at the very bottom of the page and you will find it at point number five in the FAQ’s. Interestingly, it states that this fee may vary “according to location”, which begs the question “do the supermarkets have the power to adjust the fee”? I would be interested to know this, because I am assuming that the supermarket is getting a little tickle from all this loose change converting that is going on.

One way of getting this fee down a tad, is to select one of several charities that will benefit from your savings pot when you tip it in the machine. Such donations will only attract a 7% fee instead.

So, having looked into this service, I’ve decided, and it wasn’t a long deliberation, it’s not for me, but what are my options when it comes to emptying out my piggy bank? Well, a bank would seem a good choice, but they are only likely to help if you have an account with them. The Post Office is likely to be more helpful, but they (as with the banks) will want them properly counted and bagged, which is only fair when you think how long such a service could take if they weren’t properly bagged! They may also have limits on the amount you can change at any one time so it is probably a good idea to find this out before you carry a lot of heavy bags up the high street.

Perhaps the answer is in the supermarket after all. Several offer “Christmas savings” stamps or cards. Using your spare change to buy these might mean having to count up your change more often, but they generally come with a small bonus at the end – which is the opposite to what the change machines do. Another idea is to actually spend the change on your shop. Virtually all supermarkets have self service tills now and there is nothing to stop you feeding these automatic checkouts with smaller coins. It might take a few moments longer, but, contrary to Coinstar’s belief, it is still cash!

Finally, if you do want to give it to charity, you can find a suitable charity box and just put it in. They would be happy to count it and benefit from the full amount!

HOW THIS SIMPLE BEAUTY TRICK COULD SAVE YOU £000’s

In my quest to save money I have decided to stop buying several beauty products.  Being on a budget can be a little tricky and to be honest I would prefer to save my money for a holiday rather than splash out on what to me is a want rather than a need.  At the same time, I don’t want to stop my beauty regime altogether so I have discovered the wonder that is coconut oil!

Coconut oil has long been proven to provide health benefits as well as skin and hair and uses around the home.  It has just recently become very popular and can now be found on the shelves of major supermarkets.

The oil is extracted from the coconut and is over 80% saturated fat and has an abundance of vitamin E which is why it is so beneficial for your skin and hair.  If you buy virgin coconut oil, then you will be purchasing an oil which has been refined the least and is often considered the best option.

Rather than buying lots of different products I decided to buy just one – this jar of Coconut Oil and use it in my beauty regime.  I must say I am a convert and totally amazed at the results I have been seeing.

So, what have I been using it for I hear you ask!

Well below I have listed what I have used it for:

Moisturiser:  I take a tiny amount of coconut oil in the palm of my hand and let it melt then rub on my skin in the evening for a rich moisturiser.

Exfoliator:  Take a small teaspoon of coconut oil in a small bowl and add a few pinches of rock salt.  Rub in to your skin – it makes a great exfoliator – rinse off.

Skin softener:  Rub a small amount of coconut oil on to your elbows and feet – makes rough skin smooth!

Cuticle softener:  Rub a small amount in to your cuticles before going to bed, next day they will be so soft.

Lip salve:  Take a small amount on your finger and rub on your lips – so much better than lip balms plus it smells of coconut – lovely!

Massage oil – Add a small amount of essential oil to a few teaspoons of coconut oil to make a beautiful massage oil.

After shave lotion – Coconut oil is great on your skin after shaving to cool it down.  Take a small teaspoon and heat in the palm of your hand then rub around the shaved area.

Hair – Coconut oil is a fantastic intense conditioner – rub it in to your dry hair and leave for a few hours.  When you wash out you may need to shampoo several times but I guarantee your scalp will feel so clean and look so healthy.

To purchase virgin coconut oil visit here now.

Happy beauty regiming with coconut oil!

HOW TO EARN CASHBACK FROM SHOPPING ONLINE

If you are like me you do a lot of your shopping online not least because of the convience and the ease of using discount codes online.  Another reason I love to shop online is being able to get cashback from my purchases.

Yes you heard that right – I get paid to shop online!

Cashback websites have become very popular and I can see why – who wouldn’t like to earn extra cash when you would be shopping online anyway?

While there are many sites out there, there are two which I have used for years and highly recommend.  These are TopCashBack and Quidco.

How do cashback websites work

The websites pay you when you click through their site to go to retailers and buy products.  This can be anything from fashion, beauty right through to a financial product such as car insurance.

The sign up process is very straightforward and is completely free.  If you come across a site asking you to pay – step away from it – it could be a scam!

Once you sign up you simply login and search for the retailer you want to shop with, if it’s listed then click on the link which will take you to the retailer.  Your visit to the retailer will be tracked through this affiliate link and you will be paid once the purchase has been confirmed.

You can withdraw your cashback once it has been confirmed.  You can request it to be paid in to your bank or your PayPal account.  Another bonus with TopCashBack is that you can swap your cash for Amazon or Tesco Clubcard points.  Especially useful if you are saving up for a specific purchase at these online retailers.

Another fantastic cashback provider is Quidco.  Again the basic membership is free and their payment system is similar in that you can request payment to your PayPal account or to your bank account.

In order to maximise your cashback I recommend you register with both sites and when you plan to shop online check both to see which provider is offering you the best cashback option – sometimes they offer different deals which is great.  Recently I managed to get 10% cashback from a purchase I made from Superdrug.

I highly recommend you sign up without further delay and start earning cashback – it is such an easy process.

For TopCashBack visit here, and for Quidco go here.

As a bonus if you sign up to TopCashBack today they will give you £5 M&S voucher after earning £10 cashback!  What a fantastic treat.

Happy cashback-ing!

5 TIPS TO HELP YOU TO SAVE TIME

I know some of these tips will be controversial but some of us have to admit there are days when we waste our time doing a lot without achieving very much or having leisure time that really we don’t enjoy that much!

So if you want to have more time in your day below are the places I would highly recommend you start:

  • Watching television. I know you really love watching (insert your favourite programme here), but if you realistically need more time in your day then I’m afraid that programme will have to wait.  Don’t get me wrong I’m not talking about ditching the TV programme altogether, you can record it and watch it later or indeed cut some programmes out.

  • Social media – I really did hear you groan there didn’t I? Again I am certainly not advocating for you to go cold turkey on social media but I suggest you limit your time.  I also recommend working smarter and incorporating software such as HootSuite which can schedule your tweets and retweets.  All you need is a little planning.  I have been using HootSuite for a while now and I can highly recommend it, as the work is still being completed just more effectively.

  • Email and Texting is another area that we often waste time. Continually checking your inbox or replying immediately to texts can use up a lot of your time.  Set yourself a limit to checking your phone and stick to it.  On email set up an automatic response telling people when you will get back to them.  For texting, how about you phone the person for a quick chat instead of carrying on a text conversation all night?  This will most certainly save you time.

  • Household tasks need to be done I know but there are some tasks that seem to take forever and with a little planning we can cut down on them. Of course if you can afford to hire a cleaner or a cook good for you but most of us can’t so I recommend planning meals in advance at the start of the week, that way you are not wasting time each evening thinking of what to make.  You could also cook meals in advance at the weekends for during the week – now that would save a lot of time.

  • Playing games on mobiles and tablets is something I have seen an increase in over the last year or so, it’s very apparent on public transport. I’m sorry but playing games can be another area that drains your already precious time.  Cut back or give it up completely.

Let me know what you think of my tips to add more time to your day.  If you do decide to action some of these I would recommend you constantly measure how things are improving.  It would also be helpful for you to be aware of what you do during the day to ensure the actions are adding value to whatever you want to achieve.

Happy time-saving!

VALENTINE’S DAY WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK

George is at it again – bringing you some fantastic ways to have a great Valentine’s Day and getting a great deal too!

Diamonds are probably up there as a gift even if they may not be actually a girl’s BFF. They do tend to bring the contents of a wallet into sharp focus though and with the annual schmaltzfest that is Valentine’s day soon to be upon us again, just how do we show the one we love that they are special whilst at the same time being sensible with the cash.

Certain traditions have built up over the years. Commercial traditions that warm the tills of garages that still have overpriced bouquets outside the petrol pumps at 11.45pm on the 13th February.  Commercial traditions that mean anything that can be given a 400% mark up if you make it in the shape of a heart and preferably red. Commercial traditions that… I think you get the idea, but before you dismiss me completely as an unromantic curmudgeon with long pockets and short arms, I am here to admit that nothing can be further from the truth. I am in fact a total romantic. A total romantic who likes to get value for money when it comes to gifts.

Getting the best deal on anything requires knowledge and a bit of effort. Supermarkets especially make it ridiculously easy to impulse buy things that can probably be better bought elsewhere. So planning something special is essential.

Firstly, knowledge. No one knows your other half better than you do, and because of that you already have a good idea what things they like, no matter the subject, anything is just a google search away. You can choose what and how much you spend from the comfort of your armchair and with many companies offering free next day delivery or click and collect the amount of effort required isn’t even that great.

But what kind of thing could you look for? A good idea is to make it as personal as possible. Got a favourite photograph? Why not turn it into a framed print instead of leaving it on a hard drive or on the phone. Loads of photographic print companies have offers on all types of products from photo books that can chart your relationship over time to high quality framed prints. If you find something you like, take the name of the company and google it again – this time with the phrase “voucher code” after it. You’ll be surprised how often you will find a way of getting an extra 10% off!

How about music? It is so easy now to put together a playlist and give it on a memory stick (choose a stick that looks the part – not a freebie from a bank or insurance company!) If you really want to push the boat out then vinylify.com will even put your favourite track on vinyl for you, complete with your own artwork. Prefer live music? Not all gigs are expensive and sold out. Check out local listings, most areas have a vibrant local music scene, use facebook and local directories to see what’s on near you.

How about going away for a weekend? It is almost impossible to know where to start with this one there are so many opportunities to take great breaks at a fair price.  Groupon, Lastminute, MyVoucherCodes and Trivago are just a few of the sites you can look at for inspiration, with deals to suit every budget. My own daughter and her boyfriend got a great deal through Airbnb only a few weeks ago; one night away, a good meal for two and tickets to the theatre cost less than £150 including travel costs.

Prefer to stay at home? A romantic night in is a long standing staple of Valentines and how you choose to use it is entirely up to you. From cooking a special meal yourself and having your favourite bottle of wine to ordering your favourite takeaway (This year Valentines is on a Tuesday and Domino’s do a two for Tuesday deal. A coincidence – I think not!). All the major supermarkets do a “Dine in for two” deal nowadays, they’ll probably up the price for Valentine’s, but there’s no reason why you can’t draw inspiration from what they are offering even if you don’t buy the exact same thing.

There are so many options out there to make valentines special without overspending, it just needs a little thought and planning, After all, there is nothing at all romantic about a large credit card bill.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

MAKING EASY MONEY WITH SURVEY SITES

I have spoken at length before about a fantastic survey site Prolific Academic, survey sites are a great way of making extra money and vouchers, you would be surprised at how easy and quickly you can earn by just answering a few questions.

You could earn as much as £5 for completing questions which could take up to 30 minutes of your time.  It is easy to do in your lunch break!

Survey sites do differ in what they offer in terms of number of questions, time you need to take, types of questions you are asked to complete and the amount of money you are paid.

Below I have listed a further two survey sites which I recommend as a way of making extra cash…

Reward TV UK

RewardTV has been around for approximately 10 years.  You sign up and answer questions about your viewing habits and other likes and dislikes in relation to TV programmes.

It’s a very easy to register and start earning.  Basically you watch TV as you normally do, you then login to their website and answer questions about what you watched.

Answering questions allows you to accumulate points which you save up and then get to spend.

Why not register today and see how much you can accumulate?

Pinecone

This is a great site, where you get to help influence tomorrow’s products!  You complete surveys from the comfort and convenience and get paid for sharing your thoughts.  Membership is totally free and only takes a few minutes to sign up.

Pinecone is very generous in terms of payment – you can earn up to £3 per survey so really worth signing up to now!

Why not register here and start earning now?

Happy money making!
