TIPS TO HELP YOU SET GOALS FOR 2017

As another year comes to an end we start to think of what we want to achieve as 2017 approaches.

The winter solace has passed and the New Year beckons it also signifies the shortest day has passed and the days are on the turn again as we head to spring and eventually summer.

Goal setting is a fantastic way to start the New Year, it also gives us the focus we need to achieve what we want in life.

Goal setting also helps you along a journey to a specific destination (your goal).

Goal setting also helps you set out precisely what you want to achieve and to visualise that goal in order to turn it in to reality.

Goal setting is not just about long term goals but short term ones too which are clearly defined and provides you with the motivation to focus and measure how you are doing.

HOW TO START SETTING GOALS

Before putting pen to paper it is a good idea to first think of the big goal you want to achieve, this will set the sceenee for how you break it down in to smaller achievable tasks to keep you focused.  This can be done on a week to week basis or a month by month one.

STEP 1:  SETTING YOUR OVERALL GOALS

Firstly, think of what you want to achieve in your life overall, this big goal is what you want to achieve in all aspects of your life from your career, health, family life, financial etc.  and write these down in a personal note book.

STEP 2:  SET SMALLER GOALS/TASKS

When you have set your overall goals above, create a one year plan, a six month plan and then a one month plan for each goal.  Break each goal down in to smaller tasks you are going to do to achieve that goal.

Next step  is to create a daily to do list of things you are going to action which will help you achieve the goal.  For example you may have to research a business idea or you may need to read up on a particular topic, whatever you need to reach your goal, write the tasks down.

STEP 3: BE SMART

To help you along the way try and make your goals SMART.  SMART stands for:

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Attainable

R – Relevant

T – Time bound

As an example if your goal is to start a blog, using SMART  it could be “to have started my blog by 1st March 2017”.

SOME FURTHER TIPS

Be precise when setting your tasks to achieve your goals with dates and times, this will help you stick to your plan and measure how successful you are.

Be positive.  State your goals in a positive expression, this will help you stay positive and keep on track.

Prioritise.  Give each task a number to prioritise your list.  This will also ensure you are not overwhelmed by the task ahead.

Note it down.  Make sure you write your goals and progress down in a note book, this is a great way to visualise them and keep them in mind wherever you are.

Be realistic.  It is important to be realistic with your goals.  This will also help you stay motivated.

FINALLY

Goal setting is a fantastic way of helping you decide what it is you want to achieve with your life and a plan for how you can achieve it.  It is also a way of keeping you motivated as you work towards the goal and can also help build your confidence as you grow in knowledge and achieve your smaller tasks you have set yourself.

I believe it is very important for you to set yourself goals, if one of your goals is to make extra money during 2017 I highly recommend you read my other blog posts below.

Happy Goal Setting!

WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR BANK BALANCE THIS JANUARY

Ok so as Christmas Day comes to a close and as the New Year beckons it’s a great time to start some new habits especially in terms of your finances.

A nationwide poll which was commissioned by BBC1’s Watchdog noted that after Christmas people experience debt.  The amount is on average likely to be around £250 per person with younger adults more likely to experience it.

Below I have listed a few tips to help you start to boost that bank balance.

INCOME VERSUS EXPENDITURE

I highly recommend noting down your income and expenditure – in fact to help you along the way I am offering you a FREE printable income and expenditure sheet all set up for you to enter your income and expenditure.

Once you have done that set yourself a budget for the next few months that is both realistic and achievable.

GET SMART – SHOP AROUND

After you have completed the income and expenditure sheet start shopping around for better deals on things such as your buildings and contents insurance, pet insurance, health insurance or indeed your credit cards.  Have a look at Go Compare to get quote for your insurance needs including your gas and electric to see if you are on the best deals – if not then change!  You could save yourself hundreds each year.

USE CASHBACK APPS & COUPONS

Hunt for coupons and vouchers to cut down on those grocery costs.  Coupons are not just for food either, you can also get them for beauty products!  Not forgetting the apps that you can download to your phone and get cash back from.  Here is the list…

CheckoutSmart

First download the app from the link here.  The cashback offers can be valid for in-store and online but there are terms and conditions for each so check carefully.  There is also an expiry date on the purchase – again check this carefully.

First look at what offers are listed on the app, buy the product and then take a photo of the receipt, upload it and get the cashback credited to your account.  Once you reach the £5.00 minimum payment you can transfer the amount to either your Paypal account or your bank account.

ClickSnap / Quidco

In order to access ClickSnap you will need to sign up to Quidco, just click here.  Once you sign up to Quidco, download the ClickSnap app.  Once you enter the app you will see a selection of what is on offer.  You purchase the product, take a photo of your receipt, upload it and cashback is credited to your account.

You can withdraw your cash once you reach £1 and this can be paid either via your Paypal account or your bank account.

TopCashback Snap and Save

Again download the app from here and set up your account.  Buy the product you are looking to get cashback on, take a photo of your receipt, upload it and get the cashback credited to your account.

Shopitize

Download the app from here.  Each cashback offer can only be redeemed once per offer period.  They normally change each Tuesday.  Purchase any of the products you wish to have cashback on, scan the barcode (I would suggest doing this instore to make sure you have the correct product), take a photo of your receipt, upload it and get credited for the cashback amount.

Once you reach £4.00 you can transfer your cashback to either your Paypal account or your bank account.

Shopmium

Download the app and if you wish to sign up with my referral code KMHECCCP you’ll also get cashback for a FREE Green & Blacks Organic chocolate bar!  The site is straightforward, the products you can claim cashback for are listed, purchase the product, scan the barcode, take a photo of your receipt and upload, credit is normally within the hour and is automatically transferred to your bank or Paypal account each claim you make.

GreenJinn App (for iphones only)

Download the app, register, select what kind of coupons you are interested in and hey presto cashback options will appear on your phone. Please note GreenJinn only works in Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

START A WEEKLY MEAL PLANNER

Another great way to save money is to plan ahead particularly when it comes to meals.  The first step to planning meal times is to look through your store cupboard, your fridge and your freezer to see what is lurking there.  Plan meals around what is already there – if you need additional items for that particular meal then just note those done and get what is on your list ONLY!

This will surely cut down on your grocery bill and together with the cashback apps you could save even more!

If you find a weekly meal plan daunting don’t worry – just take it a few days at a time that way you will start to get in the swing of planning meals and saving money!

AVOID IMPULSE BUYING

When you do go out, leave those credit cards behind and use cash only!  It’s amazing how having cash stops you from making impulse buys, it also stops you from buying items you really don’t need.  If you start this new habit it will most certainly bolster that bank balance not just in January but in the longer term.

SIDE HUSTLE

It’s not just about cutting back it is also about increasing your income.  There are many ways to do that.  If you have time to spare you could try out  mystery shopping, or completing surveys during your lunch break or indeed you could start a blog.  You could also sell your unwanted clothes, CDs, and DVDs online or if you have a hobby – sell your handmade items at craft fairs or online.

If you are receiving benefits, visit your local Citizen’s Advice to make sure you are claiming everything you are entitled to.  There are so many people that miss out because they are unaware of what they can claim.  Make sure you are not one of them!

I have no doubt if you do the above you will be on a journey to reduce your outgoings and increas your income.

Happy Money Saving!

10 THINGS I’M DOING RIGHT NOW TO SAVE MONEY

As well as making extra cash I am also taking steps to cut down on my expenditure.  The cost of living continues to rise and with some wages not keeping pace with inflation coupled with rising costs it is important to overhaul spending too.

I’ve read so much about living a frugal lifestyle that it now appears to be so cool – that must be a first for me!

In my quest to be more frugal this is up I’m up to:

  1. Yellow sticker hunting. Yellow sticker hunting is when supermarkets reduce food with you’ve guessed it – yellow stickers!  These are often items that have best before the day you are shopping.  The best time for me to go is around 7pm when they reduce the items the most.  If you buy bread at this time, it’s a good idea to freeze it if you don’t intend using it all .  You really can get some excellent bargains. Why  not visit your local supermarket and see where they keep the reduced section.

  1. Buying second hand clothing. It’s not just something I have been doing recently, I have always done it.  I love vintage items so the best way to buy them is in charity shops or car boot sales. You don’t have to visit a charity shop if you feel a little weird about it – why not visit Ebay or your local Gumtree site?  Here you will also find people selling clothes including kids clothing – after all they grow so fast so why not save yourself a little money? These are fantastic ways to cut down on the cost of your wardrobe – call it going vintage!

  1. Never buy anything online unless I go through TopCashBack or Quidco. If you buy anything online don’t until you go through these two cashback websites.  I have saved so much the past year getting back over £200 just for going through these sites.   Cashback can be requested in to your PayPal account or your bank account – you decide.

  1. Take home extra condiments. This is probably classed as a bit extreme but each to their own I say!  If we do go for a treat and there are jam or sauce condiments left at the end of the meal I take these home.  They come in really handy if you run out of jam or sauce at home!

  1. Planning meals and Using Grocery Apps. We draw up a weekly menu to help cut back on our groceries, it means we only buy what we need when we go shopping.  This also helps us to reduce food waste.  We also use cashback grocery apps.  These are fantastic as some items end up being free.  I highly recommend reading my article on cashback apps:  How to get money off your grocery bill by using apps.

  1. Grow your own. I am not a great gardener it has to be said but I do try and have become successful at growing herbs and salad leaves.  They grow without much effort in pots just at the back door or on the windowsill.  If you fancy giving it a go buy some seeds from your local pound shop together with a few plant pots and give it a go.  You could also team up with family and friends to swap seeds.  Honestly it is so satisfying when you grow something that you put on your own plate!

  1. Go for supermarket own brands. I have to admit to doing this on a regular basis and for a number of years.  I never really could get used to being brand loyal when it came to things like beans!  In fact when we switched to own label brands we found that some items tasted much nicer.  During your next shop why not swap just a few items to see how it goes?

  1. Keep fit without joining a gym. I hate gyms, but I hate paying for gyms even more!  There was a time when I paid a monthly fee and didn’t bother going.  I might as well have thrown the money down the drain.  Why not try keeping fit for free?  There are so many couch to 5k clubs about or walking groups you could try.  Alternatively you could download an app that will take you through an exercise programme.  The key is to set yourself small challenges like walking the stairs instead of the escalator or getting off one bus stop early to walk the rest of the way.

  1. Use coupons and vouchers. I love shopping with vouchers / coupons.  By keeping your eyes peeled in newspapers or magazines or indeed product websites you can save yourself hundreds on items. By registering with TopCashBack or Quidco you can also search for coupons or vouchers there too!  Also remember to take advantage of store reward cards.

  1. Stop being a loyal customer. I hear it all the time, oh I would never leave (insert name here), I’ve been with them for years. I have to say this is one category where I have also saved a lot of money over the years and that’s switching providers for insurance, broadband, TV, mobile, gas and electric.  Don’t be loyal to one company – shop around.  Indeed you may find if you shop around and find a better deal then you go back to your current provider and explain you are ready to leave them for a better deal – more times than not they will match the deal!  Why  not visit Go Compare and find out how much money you could save by switching some of your providers?

These are the ways in which I am saving money at the moment.  Why not give them a go and let me know how you get on.

Happy saving!

5 THINGS I’M DOING RIGHT NOW TO MAKE EXTRA CASH

Just a little over a month ago, I decided that if my family and I were ever going to get to have a holiday then I needed to seriously look at my income and expenditure.  I continually re-evaluate our expenditure but I wanted ways to increase my income at the same time as holding down a full time job.

I eventually came up with several ways of increasing my income, these I am doing now and would encourage anyone who is looking to make extra cash to also consider doing some if not all of them.

Currently I am undertaking 5 things that I believe will eventually help me achieve my goal of taking my family on a holiday.

  1. Blogging

My love for blogging I hope is evident to you.  I would encourage anyone and everyone to set up a blog.  The potential for making money is fantastic – although it will take a little time to get established but if you follow along with me as I post about how I am currently undertaking this, you will certainly do great!

The first step though is register with TSO Host to get your blog started.  Some articles that will help you out:

How to set up a blog to make money

How to monetize your blog

How to get free stuff in exchange for blog reviews

  1. Working as a virtual assistant

A Virtual Assistant is someone who helps out a business or business owner remotely – which is why it is referred to as ‘virtual’.  The assistant aspect is quite straightforward – if you think of a project assistant or a personal assistant – you will get the idea.

I registered with People per Hour and have started applying for contracts.  You too can register here and start making extra money.

  1. Mystery Shopping

I adore mystery shopping but only if the mystery shop meets my criteria which is

  • Where is it? If it’s on my way great, if not would it cost too much in petrol to get to the location?
  • Is it something I can made use of like a jumper or piece of jewellery?
  • With restaurants, am I able to take someone with me or do I need to complete the assignment on my own?

To find out about mystery shopping view my blog post here.

  1. Joined ClickWorker

As well as completing surveys another way of making some extra cash when you have a few minutes is completing tasks through ClickWorker.

I highly recommend if you are wanting to increase your extra income that you diversify your income streams.  So joining ClickWorker is another great way of making extra income.

ClickWorker is an excellent site for making extra cash.  The jobs are diverse and varied which requires you to complete small jobs from writing tasks, reviews, surveys and proofreading assignments. It is a very varied site and it can be very rewarding.

  1. Answering surveys

Answering surveys is a great way of making extra cash and vouchers.

Prolific Academic is a survey site but with a difference, it is mainly used by researchers from universities so the surveys you complete are that little bit more interesting – in my opinion anyway!

You are paid in cash so get registering today and find out how much you can make during your lunch break!

You can also earn vouchers as well with SwagBucksSwagbucks is a paid to click website which offers numerous tasks for you to do, some of these are surveys, daily polls and searching online.  Another great opportunity to save up vouchers for birthdays and Christmas.

So that is what I am up to at the moment to make extra cash.  I do hope you find something that inspires you or helps you earn extra cash.

Happy Money Making!

5 WAYS TO LOOK AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

If you are on a money saving journey for whatever reason, it is so important to look after your mental health.

Below I have listed 5 ways to help you stay positive along the journey.

Remember though if you require help please visit your Doctor.

  1. Try a little exercise

There is so much evidence now to suggest that light exercise can improve our mood no matter what your age or ability.  Exercise releases happy endorphins so give it a go, whether that’s going for a walk during your lunch break or in the evenings or exercising to a DVD or app – why not give it a go?

  1. Connect with family & friends

Social relationships can have a positive impact on how we feel about ourselves.  Connect with family and friends today.  Try phoning someone you haven’t spoken to in a while or say hello to someone you always see on your journey to work.  Make a connection and see how it goes.

  1. Write down your goals & use visualisation techniques

It can be difficult and lonely if you are on a journey to save money and make money.  It can be helpful to write down your goals and visualise these to keep you motivated.  Do this each morning and evening as a way of keeping on track.

  1. Start a hobby

Lifelong learning is common place now, it increases our social interaction with others, allows us to be more active and has the potential to increase our self-esteem.  Why not start something new today?  Go look at what is on offer in your local leisure centre or community group now.

  1. Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way of giving back, but it also helps you to connect with others and is very rewarding.  Why not see what volunteering opportunities there are in your local area?

I hope these five steps will help you look after your mental health in general but even more so if you are on a journey to save money and to make money.

Take care of yourself!

HOW TO PROMOTE AND SCHEDULE YOUR BLOG POSTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Twitter

As a blogger I know the importance that social media plays in the promotion of your blog and blog posts.  I also know that blogging schedules can become quite hectic leaving little time for promotion.

There are multiple platforms for promoting your blog posts however there is one that can often be overlooked and that is Twitter.

Using Twitter is a fantastic way of promoting your blog posts and reaching new audiences.  However it can seem very daunting, especially since you have only 140 characters to write a post, nevertheless Twitter is a fantastic tool to promote your blog posts which is why I wanted to share with you the fantastic scheduling tool that is Hootsuite.

The importance of Scheduling your Tweets

There is little doubt there are a lot of people on social media and Twitter is no exception.  It is important then to ensure you market your blog posts not just once but continually to ensure your followers get the opportunity to see your tweet among an array of other tweets.

That’s why scheduling is so important, as it allows you to get your message across within a tweet several times a day.  It also allows you to schedule a week or longer in advance.

This has several benefits, you can fit the scheduling in with your own workload – freeing  you up during other times. It also means if you have an extra busy day or unfortunately if you are feeling poorly – you know your blog posts have been scheduled in advance giving you one less thing to worry about.

Scheduling also ensures that you are in contact with your audience on a regular basis whatever is going on in your life currently.  It also means you will have a lot more time in your day to concentrate on other things as well as giving you the space and time to focus on other areas of your blog that you want to work on.

Recommending Hootsuite

I highly recommend Hootsuite as a tweet scheduler.  In fact Hootsuite is more than a scheduler for Twitter, it also integrates your other social media platforms but I have mainly been using it for Twitter at the moment.

Hootsuite is what is referred to as a social media management tool.  It helps you track and manage all your social media platforms within one dashboard.

Scheduling is so easy:

  • First you click on “Compose Message”
  • You type the tweet you want to send and include your blog post link
  • Click to select a profile (your twitter account or other social media account you have linked at start up)
  • Click the calendar to select the date and time you want to send the message
  • You then click “Schedule” and hey presto your tweet is scheduled.

Another fantastic feature is the bulk scheduling tool where you can schedule up to 350 tweets at once!  Yes you read right 350 at once!

This is a fantastic feature that will allow you to save time.

Don’t take my word for it though, sign up to HootSuite now and take advantage of their FREE 30 day trial, you then pay just £7.99 per month which will give you back so much time to concentrate on other things while your blog posts are being promoted!

I can’t recommend Hootsuite highly enough.  Happy promoting!

How To Set Up A Blog

TIPS TO HELP YOU INCREASE YOUR BLOG INCOME

I have already written about how to monetize your blog through affiliate marketing here but I have been working through other strategies to increase my blog income and wanted to share these tips with you now.

I have broken them down in to five distinct approaches to make it easier to follow.

Monetizing your current content

If you already have content on your blog then the quickest and most effective method of increasing income is to work with your current content.

You can start by adding affiliate links to each post be that within the text or add in options for your readers to purchase items you are writing about.

Remember to join SkimLinks so that you can have access to over 20,000 affiliate links to companies, making it easier to add affiliate links to your content.

Sponsored posts

As a blogger it can be easy to underestimate the value of your posts.  It is also easy to forget that sponsored posts can be in the form of both cash or gifts.

There are many businesses out there that are trying to grow their customer base and often reach out to bloggers as a way of doing this.  You don’t have to wait for them to contact you though, be proactive.

I recommend you start with companies whose products you already use, contact the marketing department and offer to write a sponsored blog post.  Do not though email every company under the sun – be genuine about your love of the product and detail why their product or service would be a good fit for your blog.

Personally I believe bloggers offer fantastic opportunities to businesses in promoting their products so don’t sell yourself short!

Selling an E-book

If you have been blogging for a while, the chances are you have enough fantastic content to pull together in to an E-book to sell.  You really don’t need to reinvent the wheel, look through your content and start planning what kind of E-book you think your readers would love.

You can sell directly from your blog or you can upload to Amazon to sell, either way marketing will be key to getting your readers to purchase it.

If you don’t have enough content at the moment, plan ahead and start thinking about your options for an E-book, that way when the time is right to pull everything together you will have a plan in place.

Optimising your advert space

Many bloggers currently offer sponsored advertising on their blog.  If you are a new blogger consider offering advertising space by promotion through your social media channels.  However, if you already do offer adverting space you really should consider raising your prices.

It is extremely helpful that other bloggers are willing to feature small businesses with an advert for £10-£20 for the year but if a company is willing to pay £10-£20 chances are they are willing to pay £20-£40 for the full year.

This simple technique could double your ad revenue overnight and you would still be offering a fantastic deal.

Work as a Virtual Assistant to other Bloggers

It can take hard work and dedication to make money from blogging, it also requires you to build up traffic, increase page views as well as blogger outreach and networking.  These are fantastic skills you acquire which can be used to become a virtual assistant to help other new or established bloggers.

Read my post on how to make money as Virtual Assistant here and register with People Per Hour now to put those fantastic skills you have acquired to use in order to make some extra money.

I hope these ideas have helped you consider how you too can start to boost your blog income.  There are other ways you can increase your income too, have a read of my blog posts below to find out how.

HOW TO MAKE MONEY FROM SURVEY SITE PROLIFIC ACADEMIC

Prolific Academic is a survey site but with a difference, it is mainly used by researchers from universities so the surveys you complete are that little bit more interesting – in my opinion anyway!

What is also different about Prolific Academic is that after you answer some pre-screening questions at the very beginning of registration you then don’t get screened out of any other survey, you are then just given the surveys you are eligible for rather than like the other survey sites out there where you have to answer about 10 questions only to be told you are not eligible!

PAYMENT

I earned £5.50 for a couple of surveys over the past few weeks and this very evening completed two more surveys for £1.50.  Payment is made via Paypal once you reach the threshold of £5.  Payment is made by your own request so you can build the pot up to when you need it.  After requesting payment of my £5.50, it was in my Paypal account within a day or so.

I have started again and I am hoping to save the money from the surveys for birthdays and Christmas 2017 – well you can never be too early saving for Christmas with two teenage boys!

HOW TO GET STARTED

I highly recommend signing up for Prolific Academic now, their studies are interesting, there is no screening out and the payment for the time taken is excellent.  The cashing out process is quick and easy and the staff are very helpful if you have any queries at all.

Why not register here and have a go?  Just remember you will need to check the site on a regular basis as they don’t email when new surveys are waiting.

Happy money making.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR GROCERY SHOPPING

In my quest to not only increase my income to save for a family holiday I also have to look at my outgoings so I have researched and used cashback apps over the last 6-12 months and am going to share these with you now.

Today it is difficult learning how to budget your family income, especially if you are a newlywed or a first time mummy and have bills you never expected but I know with a little planning you can make your money go further – even on a small budget so you can save up and buy the things you really want!

Over the past while I have saved hundreds by using cashback apps, although it does take a little bit of planning before you go but trust me, it really is worth it.

How does cashback apps work?

Put quite simply they give you back money you spend on items that they have listed on their app.  The difference between the app as opposed to a coupon is that you need to buy the product first before getting your money back.

Each app has a different selection of products with some even offering 100% cashback – making the item free!

Alternatively sometimes you can combine the cashback with coupons which will give you an even bigger saving – I will be writing about coupons in a later post so keep checking the blog.

How do I get started?

First you need to download the app to your phone and register.

Happy money saving.
